” A Champion Becomes A Legend” were the words that were called out as Makybe Diva raced to victory for her third consecutive Melbourne Cup, a feat that no horse has ever accomplished in the history of Australia’s great race. After the race trainer Lee Freedman encouraged “go and find the youngest kid on the track because we will never see this again”.
Australian racing has been blessed with another champion since then in the undefeated champion in Black Caviar. In her entire career she cruised to victory 25 times setting a new record and drawing in the crowds wherever she raced turning grandstands a shade of salmon and black dots- even taking these colours and the Australian Flag to race at Royal Ascot.
Some say that to see a horse go undefeated over so many starts would be something that we would not see again, however, we have not had to wait long at all for another champion to race into legend status. Since the 2014 ATC Oaks, there has been one name that has taken every racing accolade that a horse could possibly earn including the prestigous title of World’s Best Race Horse rated by Longines, everyone knows the colours and the owners, but importantly the name on everyone’s lips is WINX.
The last time Winx was beaten seems like a lifetime ago, 26 starts to be exact. On Saturday 18th August 2018 she raced into the record books yet again taking the title from Black Caviar for the Most Consecutive Number of Wins. Every time Winx runs the crowds flock into the grand stands, to the tie up areas in the hope of getting a photo of the champion and especially at Randwick she packs the theatre of the horse that erupts in cheers when she enters. As she kicks into another gear on the track, the crowd roars and the Winx flags are waved as the champ comes back to the continued roars of the crowd.
As Winx rests ahead of her next assignment in the George Main stakes on the 15th September, the next record that she looks to take is to win 4 consecutive Cox Plates- Currently she shares the record with the great Kingston Town.
Regardless if you are interested in racing or not, Winx has continued to put Australian racing on the world stage and showcases the quality of our horses.
Winx is a horse that many will talk about for many centuries to come and as we grow older we will be able to share the stories with our grand kids and great grand kids. Winx is the modern day Phar Lap.
What other records await this equine star? What I find interesting is that our elite thoroughbreds of the modern era have all been female- women in racing are definitely dominating against the boys!
